A Recap of This Week's Events, and What's Coming Up This Week in Southern Virginia

The past week has been pretty eventful here in Southern Virginia. Here's a brief recap of some fun things I have had a chance to enjoy this week, followed by a list of a few upcoming events here in the next week.
1. Last Wednesday night, country due Joey+Rory played to a sold out crowd at The Prizery and made a big announcement while there. Rory Feek is directing a new movie entitled Josephine, and that movie is being filmed right here in Halifax County. (Photo Credit James Edmunds)
2. Film crews, reenactors, and actors have since set up arrived in Halifax County and are taking up temporary residence at Berry Hill Plantation. Filming began April 27, and is expected to go until May 16th. I am still hoping to get an insider's view of filming, and if so will be sure to share.
3. Thursday night, Denny Hamlin brought the Denny Hamlin Short Track Showdown to the South Boston Speedway, and he brought numerous other NASCAR drivers, crews, family members, friends, and more than 6,000 visitors to this fundraising event for the Denny Hamlin Foundation, which supports Cystic Fibrosis awareness and research. This area thanks Denny Hamlin for again choosing the South Boston Speedway as the location for this big event, and thanks the Denny Hamlin Foundation for its continued efforts and good will.
4. On Friday, a crowd of supporters gathered together in the Town of Halifax for the bell ringing signifying the official opening of the Kings Bridge Landing at the Banister River on the Southern Virginia Wild Blueway. I am so looking forward to putting my kayak in the water here this spring.
5. I mentioned earlier in the week that I helped host a party at the Prizery this past Saturday night. I do plan to share pictures. It is a great facility perfect for hosting reunions, receptions, and events, and I am looking forward to sharing my committee's experience in working with this organization.
6. The Virginia Association of Conference and Visitor Bureaus arrived in South Boston this week. 60 or so people from around the state, as far as Fairfax County and Abingdon, were here with us this week. I attended his event in Loudon County last year, and the local tourism department here in Halifax County won the Visitor Center of the Year award, and the Halifax County Heritage and Antique Machinery Festival won the Heritage Tourism Event of the Year. It seemed only fitting that Halifax County help host and organize this year's event. The group stayed at Berry Hill resort, where they had a wonderful lunch Wednesday, then headed to Hudson Heritage Farms for a cheese making class, hayrides, and dinner prepared in the outdoor kitchen by Chef Steven Schopen of Molasses Grill and served on the patio.
The following day, workshops and meetings were held, and the event concluded with lunch in the Berry Hill main dining room and the awards ceremony. We appreciate the VACVB selecting Halifax County to hold this event, and truly hope the group enjoyed their stay enough to return!

7. I was so proud of my little guy Wednesday afternoon. He has been going to youth choir on Wednesdays at Main Street United Methodist church, and this performance was the culmination of the youth choir's efforts throughout the year. The sweet ladies of the church provided refreshments afterward, and each child was give a certificate and a medal. It was really precious. The children, the pianist Ben Woosley, and choir master Denise Ferrell have done a beautiful job. Thanks to you all for your hard work and dedication to teaching music to the children and helping them to learn how to use it for worship.
8.Last night SoVA Dad and I took SoVA Belle and SoVA Beau to see Wayne Henderson and Helen White at the Prizery. He has played from Carnegie Hall to MerleFest, so it was pretty awesome to see him in our own Halifax County last night. They played for nearly three hours, telling story after story in between songs. My favorite was the story he told about being asked to play when the Queen of England visited Virginia for the 400th Anniversary of the settling of Jamestown, which happened to take place on his birthday. During the special performance, he thanked the Queen for coming to his birthday party, and of all the beautiful music that was made that day, the clip of that one-liner was what made national news. You gotta love it.
8. The Garnier-Thiebaut Warehouse Sale is back in town this Thursday, April 30-May 2! I love this sale! I had a sneak peek earlier this week, which I shared on the blog here. I came home from shopping trip number 1 with wash cloths, lotions, bathrobes, and new sheets for Carrington. My eight year old son is sleeping on 800 thread county Egyptian cotton sheets. I didn't have anything that nice until I was...well, last year. For more information about this sale read this blog post.
9. Tonight we have plans to visit the Halifax County Heritage and Antique Machinery Festival at the Fairgrounds. SoVA Dad is going to take the children around while I volunteer at the Halifax County Historical Society's table, so come see me. We will have books and other items for sale, and I would love to see you there.
