An Afternoon at Shangrila Guest Ranch

Shangrila Guest Ranch, South Boston, Virginia

It has been a busy week for our family, with work, school (it was testing week, at that!), an exciting whirlwind of a business trip, and National Guard duty. We were able to start our week off, however, in a most relaxing way at the serene Shangrila Guest Ranch in South Boston, Virginia. We were so grateful to have been invited to spend an afternoon with our hosts and owners Julie and Gary Holmes and their sweet children, and with Barn Manager Jessica Randall and Claire Sistek.

When we arrived at the ranch, Jessica met us in the driveway with a Gator farm vehicle. We piled in, and set off on a tour of the facilities.  Nubby, the 16 year old cat was the first farm animal we met on our ranch tour. Nubby is pictured in front of the dining room, which can accommodate groups, and where breakfast and other meals are cooked and served daily.

Don't you love these horseshoes hanging on a fence? Shangrila is a photographer's playground.

What's a visit to a guest ranch without a horse ride? Shangrila offers western riding lessons, trail rides, and is starting new classes soon. They offer weekend getaways, girls weekends, family reunion and family vacation opportunities, and more.  Click here for their website.

Can't you see yourself in one of these chairs overlooking this picturesque pond?
Maybe with a glass of wine or a book in hand?

Look at those curls! Shangrila Owners Julie and Gary Holmes' daughter is not only adorable,
she is also a natural on a horse.  Growing up on a guest ranch certainly has its perks!

Barn Manager Jessica Randall and Shangrila's newest employee Claire Sistek both have Biology degrees from their respective colleges, as well as extensive education and experience riding, teaching, competing, managing, and well...you name it!  Above all, both girls love horses, and it shows! These girls are amazing - both knowledgeable and incredibly patient and accommodating.

Thank you so much Shangrila Guest Ranch for a wonderful day!
The children are already begging for another day at Shangrila, so
I am sure we will see you again soon!
