Pancakes, Halicraft Art Fest, and Scouting Greatness: A Southern Virginia Spring Saturday
Happy Spring, Southern Virginia
It was a busy day for our family, as well as many others, this beautiful first April Southern Virginia Saturday. For a county the size of ours in rural Southern Virginia, we have a lot going on for all kinds of people with all kinds of interests.
The Halifax County Little Theatre is preparing to present "Beehive, the 60s Rock Musical" at the Prizery, April 25 - May 4. This show will surely bring down the house! The HCLT Board of Directors, of which I am a member, put on a pancake breakfast fundraiser at Applebee's Restaurant in South Boston, Virginia. We sold tickets at $8 each, which included all you can eat pancakes, a single serving of sausage links, and a beverage. Applebees kept $2 of each ticket sold, and HCLT kept the rest. They provided the cook, we provided the waitstaff. I believe I have found a new calling - hostessing! Many smiling faces came through the door - maybe it was sunshine, maybe the smell of pancakes, probably both! I loved greeting the patrons and seating them, even enjoyed bussing tables. Who knew?
Ms. Pat Anderson Flowers, the recently hired Managing Director of the Prizery (l), Sandy Slayton, HCLT President, and Greg Donner, HCLT Board Member, enjoy pancakes at the HCLT Beehive fundraising pancake breakfast.
Do you recognize this mover and shaker? Meet Rebecca Ramey, the Events Coordinator for the Town of Halifax. She is creative, full of ideas, and energetic, too! Because of Ms. Ramey, the Halifax Village Association hosted the first Halicraft Art Festival. From 9am until 3pm, artists displayed and sold their artwork on the lawn in front of historic Halifax County Courthouse. Vendors and crafters were lined along Main Street, and children's activities and a bouncy house were set up in front of the Town of Halifax Farmer's Market. Of course, what southern small art festival is complete without a wine garden featuring local wines? Halicraft had that, too!
My favorite thing about this event is that every one in town was there it seemed, neighbors, old friends, and some real characters, all taking the same stroll, enjoying the same sunshine, and sharing smile after smile after spring Saturday smile.
I am adding Halicraft to my list of reasons that I adore the Town of Halifax! Thank you, Rebecca! There are lots more treats in store for us this season. Go to their facebook page at Town of Halifax Farmers Market to see what they have planned or stay tuned!
To top off this wonderful spring day, we were very honored to attend the Eagle Scout Ceremony of James Halasz (pictured below, far left). My husband Mark Thackston, an Eagle Scout since 1986, was asked to speak and give the Charge at the Eagle Scout ceremony today. In his speech he said that his own father, the late General Carroll Thackston, instilled in him the importance of distinguishing himself in a world getting larger day by day. By earning Eagle Scout, one is already a step ahead in doing so.
Congratulations to James Halasz, Halifax County's newest Eagle Scout. We pray that the skills and characteristics gained from your scouting journey will help you to distinguish yourself as you continue in your endeavors. James is the son of Jim and Deb Halasz of South Boston, Virginia.
Some of the things we missed, because there just aren't enough hours in the day...
The Annual Spring Festival hosted by the South Boston-Halifax County Junior Women's Club, which was held at the Tobacco Heritage Trail in South Boston. This dynamic and diverse group of women who live or work in Halifax County plan great events for the community and have fun doing it. Keep up to date of what's going on with the South Boston-Halifax County Junior Women's Club at sobojwc.com.
The South Boston Speedway played host to the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour 150 / NASCAR Whelen Late Model T 75 this April 5. If you missed this race, there's no need to worry. There is an exciting season lined up at the South Boston Speedway, including next Saturday's South Boston Speedway Pit Party and the April 24 Denny Hamlin Shorttrack Showdown, in addition to the regular season.
How did you spend your day? Help keep me posted of current and upcoming events in the area, so that I can pass them along. In the meantime, enjoy the rest of this weekend, doing whatever it is that brings you joy. -E
